An Overview of the Floorcoverings Market

The floorcoverings market, like many other industries, has faced a number of challenges over the past few years:
- Covid-19
- Brexit
- Ukraine War
This has resulted in rising costs, which has led some manufacturers to increase their stockholding in the UK.
Significant increases in raw materials costs, notably wood, have also led to manufacturing price increases, some of which have had to be passed on to customers.
The floorcoverings market comprises four key sectors which, in value terms, are carpets (56%), vinyl (18%), wood/laminates (15%) and other materials (11%) (including ceramic & stone tiles, which constitutes 9% of this).
The Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT) sector has been the fastest growing area. However, other types of floorcoverings, including carpets, natural stones and also linoleum & other materials have also grown, to varying degrees.
LVT has become highly popular in the domestic sector given the appeal of realistic and modular patterns and designs, which can be laid at different angles to create a more premium effect, such as herringbone and chevron; some designs incorporate grouting effects, to simulate ceramic tiles, or graining textures to simulate woodgrains.
Prospects remain favourable for longer term market performance to 2026, given demand from both the residential & contract sectors; this includes housing RMI, health & education.
