Low Carbon Wall Cladding for Future Homes

The roll‑out of the Future Homes and Buildings Standard (FHBS) is a clear turning point for anyone involved in façade specification. With the Standard published in March 2026 and set to come into force in 2027, its requirement to cut operational energy use and carbon emissions of new homes by around 75% forces a fresh look at how walls are built, insulated and finished. For product manufacturers, housebuilders and façade specifiers this is not just a compliance task – it’s a market opportunity.

 

Why cladding matters now

External wall performance is central to meeting FHBS targets. The Standard strengthens Part L expectations and tightens the U‑value and whole‑building performance tests that determine compliance. That shifts emphasis from purely aesthetic choices to solutions that deliver airtightness, thermal continuity and reliable detailing around openings. Under the FHBS, cladding becomes part of the energy solution and not an afterthought.

 

Where opportunities lie

External wall insulation (EWI) and high‑performance render systems: With retrofit and new‑build fabric performance under scrutiny, EWI systems that deliver low thermal bridging and durable finishes will see stronger specification. Public programmes and grant schemes supporting retrofit keep demand steady.

 

  • Brick and brick‑faced MMC solutions: Facing bricks remain the dominant finish by area, but FHBS accelerates adoption of offsite brick panels and thin‑brick systems that pair traditional appearance with improved fabric performance and faster installation.
  • Rainscreen and composite façades: For mid‑ and high‑rise developments, rainscreens offer tested thermal solutions while enabling high‑quality aesthetics. Systems that integrate insulation and tested fire performance will stand out to risk‑averse specifiers.
  • Curtain wall and structural glazing: Glass façades will continue where energy performance is proven – expect more thermally broken frames, improved coatings and integrated shading to meet the Standard’s performance tests.

Under the Future Home Standard, specifiers and clients will increasingly expect:

  • Evidence of whole‑building compliance, not just component U‑values.
  • Low embodied carbon data and supplier transparency on materials and manufacturing.
  • Robust technical packs, BIM files and traceable test evidence to support approvals under the Building Safety and Product Regulation reforms.
  • Ease of installation and compatibility with MMC approaches to reduce on‑site labour demand.

 

How manufacturers and distributors can respond

  • Package performance: Promote tested system performance (installed U‑value and detailing) alongside product aesthetics.
  • Build trust: Publish BIM assets, test certificates and embodied‑carbon statements to shorten approval cycles.
  • Support MMC: Offer pre‑assembled façades and brick panels that reduce on‑site labour and meet fabric energy standards.
  • Train supply‑chain partners: Ensure installers and merchants can advise on compliance details, not just product appearance.

The Future Homes Standard reframes cladding from a finish choice into a strategic performance element. Businesses that present cladding solutions as verified, low‑carbon, and installation‑ready will win more specification opportunities as developers and clients seek confidence that designs will pass tougher Part L and FHBS tests.
