A Market Shaped by Electrification, Retrofit Demand and Energy Efficiency
The UK space heating market is entering a period of transition. Following several years affected by economic uncertainty, weaker construction activity, and changing consumer and business spending patterns, market performance remains subdued. However, longer-term trends indicate that the sector is increasingly being shaped by decarbonisation, electrification, and the drive to improve building energy performance.
Electrification Remains a Key Market Trend
One of the most notable developments within the residential market is the continued growth of electric heating products. Electric products now account for the largest share of residential space heating demand, while electric fires have steadily gained share at the expense of gas alternatives over the past two decades. Their growing popularity reflects ease of installation, product innovation and compatibility with modern homes.
Growth in installed electric heating has also been supported by improvements in product performance, smart controls and energy-management features. Looking ahead, the introduction of the Future Homes and Buildings Standard in 2027 is expected to support demand for electric heating products designed to operate alongside heat pumps and other low-temperature heating systems.
The continuing decarbonisation of the UK electricity grid and wider investment in low-carbon technologies are also expected to reinforce interest in energy-efficient electric heating solutions.
Retrofit Remains the Largest Source of Demand
Replacement and refurbishment activity continues to represent the most important source of demand across the UK space heating market.
In the non-residential sector, the majority of installations are associated with repair, maintenance and improvement projects, while the residential market is also heavily dependent on replacement demand rather than new build housing.
This reflects the scale of the UK’s existing building stock and the ongoing need to replace ageing heating systems, improve energy efficiency and meet evolving performance standards.
Government decarbonisation initiatives, rising energy costs and increased focus on building performance are expected to support continued investment in heating system upgrades.
Consequently, retrofit projects are likely to remain a key area of activity across both residential and non-residential sectors.
Controls and Connectivity Are Becoming Increasingly Important
Another significant trend within the space heating market is the growing role of controls technology.
Across the non-residential market, demand is increasingly focused on advanced heating controls, Building Management Systems (BMS) and energy-management platforms that can improve efficiency, reduce operating costs and support decarbonisation objectives.
Residential products are following a similar direction, with smart thermostats, app-based controls and connected heating systems becoming more widely available.
As energy efficiency remains a key consideration for building owners and occupants, technologies that help monitor, manage, and optimise energy use are expected to play an increasingly important role in heating system specification and replacement decisions.
Looking Ahead at the Space Heating Market
The outlook to 2030 points towards a gradual return to growth, although future market development is expected to be shaped more by technological change and regulatory requirements than by significant volume expansion.
The transition towards lower-carbon heating, continued electrification and growing adoption of smart controls are expected to influence product development and investment across both residential and non-residential sectors. For manufacturers, distributors and installers, many of the strongest opportunities are likely to be linked to retrofit activity and products that support improved energy performance.
In this respect, the market is increasingly evolving beyond the supply of heating appliances alone towards a broader focus on energy-efficient, connected, and adaptable heating solutions.
